Villa Ludwigshöhe in Edenkoben

The villa Ludwigshöhe at Edenkoben, the ancient summer residence of King Ludwig I. of Bavaria, is one of the most beautiful landmarks of the region. Located at the foot of the Rietburg, the small castle was built after the plans of the architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Gärtner in 1846. In 1852, the building was finished in the Italian style. In 1975, the buoyant summer residence became property of the federal state of the Rhineland-Palatinate and was restored true to original. Today, visitors can marvel at the Pompeian mural paintings, the wooden mosaic floors built after Latin archetypes and several pieces of furniture. The villa is regularly used for concerts. Moreover, it houses the Max-Slevogt-gallery of the State Museum Mainz, whose collection contains paintings from the estate of the impressionistic artist Max Slevogt (1868-1932), who was born in Bavaria.
