Terra Sigillata Museum Rheinzabern

Terra Sigillata Museum Rheinzabern

Rheinzabern is one of the oldest settlements in the Palatinate. Founded as a site for travellers to rest on the Roman road from Basel to Mainz, Rheinzabern became a manufacturing centre for terra sigillata pottery in the first century AD, the red, shining “Roman porcelain”. The museum illustrates the greatness of the town’s Roman past, excavation plans and video documentaries and is home to a collection of exhibits. It is also the venue for a permanent flea market for books. The museum programme is further supplemented by a unique horde of 1008 metal items discovered in Neupotz which were the raiding booty of a Germanic tribe in the 3rd century. In addition to these attractions, special exhibitions are held regularly.
